IN LEBANON DURING THE SYRIAN CRISIS

A film by Vincent Urban:

In September 2014, Vincent Urban and Stefan Templer traveled to Lebanon to capture what life is like for Syrian refugees living in the Bekaa Valley. They were hosted by the humanitarian organisation Medair who has been helping newly arriving refugees primarily with establishing safe shelters since 2012. More information about Medair click here.

This film is a collections of sights and sounds from their experience in the informal settlements of the Bekaa Valley where more than 130.000 Syrian refugees are seeking safety. The government has been hesitant to allow formal refugee camps, so these families are living in makeshift shelters on rented farmland from Lebanese farmers with little to no amenities such as water and sanitation.

The Bekaa Valley is situated just an hour drive West to the capitol, Beirut, and just a few kilometers away from Damascus, the Syrian capitol. They also shot some surrounding landscapes and life in Beirut to show the visual and cultural context of the situation in Lebanon.

Directed & Edited by: Vincent Urban
Camera: Vincent Urban & Stefan Templer
Music: Ben Lukas Boysen – “Gravity”

DOWN BY OCCUPANTHER

On “Chimera” Munich musician Martin Brugger presents as Occupanther hymns for a new generation of slackers who no longer seek to justify their lethargy with the fine irony of a Beck Hansen. The age of irony is over anyway, declaring yourself as a ‘loser’ and thus refusing any kind of responsibility is quite simply not cutting it anymore. But neither does Brugger seek to take responsibility for this generation’s life in the fast lane and efficiency. His music probes too deep for a quick effect, takes a lot of time and itself seriously.

RED BULL BOMB THE LINE SHANE O´NEILL VIDEO

All hail the king! The “Baustelle” has a new regent. In the biggest session the world-famous street spot “Kulturforum” has ever seen, 50 skateboarders from 15 nations were fighting for the crown. The downhill course was certainly a skateboarder’s paradise. The Australian Shane O´Neill, came, saw and won — with an incredible combo of a nollie nosegrind at the long hubba, a perfect switchflip out of the kicker and a nollie backside heelflip at the stairs.

And here is the documentary:

FACE OF THE CITY DAN BERGERON STREET ART

Dan Bergeron, aka fauxreel, is an artist based in Toronto who has been creating for the better part of a decade photo based street interventions. Within his project “face of the city” he used the distressed surfaces of walls in modern cities to create stunning portraits.

The artist says, “as the walls and surfaces of the city define its physical character and spatial identity, the faces of its inhabitants provide the city with its personality, disposition and magnetism. The fusion of these two entities will simultaneously expose the frailty of urban architecture and to a certain extent human existence, while conversely exploring the idea that beauty truly lies in the scars, wrinkles and blemishes of places we live and people we meet.”

THE PAST IN COLOR REDISCOVERING HISTORY PHOTOGRAPHY

Modern technology never ceases to amaze. Swedish artist Sanna Dullaway is another remarkable example that it only takes a powerful idea, some Photoshop skills and a little patience – between 40 minutes and 2 hours to be precise – to let us rediscover history, or at least question our very own perception of it.

Sanna picked out some of the worlds most iconic black-and-white photos and has carefully colorized them – putting some of the most defining moments of the twentieth century into a strangely current and sometimes disturbing context. It also gives a powerful insight into the pioneer days of reportage photography with the rare chance to relive the moments those men and women were drawn to back then – and which they wanted to capture and share. From nuclear testing on the idyllic Bikini Atoll, the unmasked brutalities of the Vietnam War or the true limitations of the “American Dream” in 1937. Her project has also included famous faces like Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Anne Frank or Charlie Chaplin.

Check out more of her amazing portfolio here. The Mail Online has some more historic background information about selected images.

VANS IPHONE CASE GADGET

The coolest iPhone case so far – the “Vans Rubber Waffle Case”.
Planned as a promotion goodie around Christmas Vans created these cases with orginial waffle construction and “off the wall” flag on the side. The cases were available in the Vans flagship stores. Some lucky guys got one before they were out of stock. Later some cases were sold on eBay for ridiculous prices. But all who didn´t get one can be happy. As we heard the cases will be available around June on Frontline.com.
